Mini language lesson #16: Hungarian proverbs, sayings vol.3
We just can’t get enough of proverbs, can we? Well, sayings and proverbs are quite important in any language, because they help you express commonplace truth or emotions nicely. They are concise and easy to remember, plus you’re going to feel very cool when detecting or using them 🙂
Have you ever wondered how proverbs and sayings were created? They mostly originate from historic times and folk culture, and they express important experiences and truths in a witty way. So these commonly known expressions usually offer advice or wisdom.
There are thousands of sayings and proverbs in the Hungarian language, but we always try to share the most useful ones that are actually used in everyday speech, therefore recognising them is quite important. This article is the continuation of volume one and two.
Keep in mind that we are not linguists in any way, we’re just as dazzled by the curiosities of the Hungarian language as foreigners are. So this series doesn’t aim to explain the etymology of words, it’s more a fun take on our language. We try to bring Hungarian closer to you with witty learning cards made by Daily magyar, a language-enthusiast person, whose posts give an insight into the complexity of the Hungarian grammar. But don’t worry, it’s all done in an easy-going way, so that it can make learning fun.
